Escher in Concrete

Inspired by M.C. Escher’s “Relativity,” this sculpture manipulates gravity in three dimensions.

I used concrete to experiment with textures by creating molds from materials such as rough and smooth wood, foam core boards, and egg cartons. The resin helped enhance the illusion of a heavy object floating in defiance of gravity.

The idea came to me as I played “Interstellar Main Theme.” (Me playing “Interstellar Main Theme” on the piano)

As I prefer to think quietly to myself, I've become surprisingly absorbed in “Interstellar Main Theme.” I wanted to feel the mysterious sound that expresses the passage of time in space when it is drawn or held by hand.

I thought by experimenting with gravity and creating this space that defies the conventional laws of physics, I could explore my existence in time and space and represent the intangible aspects of our existence.
