“We are not for Display”



When it comes to tourist spots, foreign cultures are often “displayed” as a form of entertainment. This painting interrogates these people who distance themselves from the culture, perceiving the locals merely as spectacles rather than embracing the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into a new culture. Reflecting on my own experiences of transitioning from living in Korea to the States, I have felt this emotional distance in the streets. I was inspired to explore the “Exotic Eye” — a concept I observed in my own experiences and the experiences of others during visits to Hawaii.
